Please don’t make the schoolboy error of thinking that just because you have to tackle something in your business, and you seriously intend to accomplish it, this automatically makes you good at it when you get around to doing it.
I – and plenty of my clients over the years – have been guilty of thinking that we can just “wing stuff” in our business and so interchanges like this are horribly common😫
Client "I want to complete a great business plan for 2024 so we have a road map."
Me the Coach: Great, what reading and learning are you doing, or will you commit to before you start executing so that you can do it well?
Client: 😳
Common Sense?
Common sense may have got you and I to where we are now, but with the tough trading times we are in, it isn’t enough. No, if we want to do something for the first time or do it better than we did it last time, we have to sign up to learn and read some new stuff. We have to accept that unless we input something new into our heads, the same old under-par result will occur no matter how insistently we think we can get a different, better result by doing the same thing we’ve always done.
As adults who thought we were done with school and learning this can be a shock. “I don’t have time to read and study!”
And this is true when it comes to business and life. But the things we need to do and do well as entrepreneurs – planning, selling, securing an ROI on our offerings, money, effort and team, leading, problem-solving and being the Chief Attitude Officer – have to be learned. We cannot hope to do them well without investing in ourselves with available know-how and expertise and then practising what we’ve learned.
Our Relationships
And the same goes for our key relationships with our spouses and partners, and for those of us who parent children. These are two of the most key things we’ll ever do in life and yet how many of us resort to reading, learning and attending courses to fill our heads with helpful hints and best practice ahead of time?
Consulting the Internet?
Oh yes, we resort to media and social media as a knee-jerk when things get desperate or a crisis looms….but for everyday excellence? And then we wonder why success eludes us?
Build the business YOU want
When it's our business there is no excuse. We have to be able to sell, be financially fluent, know how to lead, be good at planning and be determined to be the most positive person in the room always.
And when it comes to parenting and being the best partner we can be, why would we take a chance on not being the best we can be?
Fall in love with reading. It’s a skill for life that both it and your business will thank you for. I'd love it if you checked out my book for business owners. You can find PEACE by Piece on Amazon HERE.
